Honest Begging

Chicago CubsLast week, my colleague, Mike Murphy, and I had business in Chicago.  While there, we decided to take in a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field.  Exiting the stadium after a drubbing of the Phillies, we noted a beggar standing on the sidewalk soliciting monetary gifts from the passing crowd.  But his marketing tactic was not the usual cardboard sign reading, "WILL WORK FOR FOOD."  No, he decided to take an altogether different approach.  His sign offered this entreaty: "I CAN'T LIE.  I JUST WANT A COLD BEER."  Remarkably, the strategy seemed to be working.  This man had wagered that no one liked a hypocrite.  With such a clever strategy, I fully expect one of the major Chicago firms to hire him!

"Come and buy my rubbish!"
Larry, we had a similar experience in Goa, India, as a family. After what felt like being bombarded by various folk on the beach trying to sell us little ornaments and necklaces etc, one enterprising lady had a different approach, and one that worked! She immediately gained the affections (and patronage) particularly of the Brits who were on the beach, by calling out, 'Come and buy my rubbish! It's as cheap as chips!' We were all a little stunned and began laughing and looking at her trinkets. 'Come on!', she continued, 'Cheaper than Tesco's!' (a high street grocery store in the UK). Everyone loved her for her honesty and humour, she gathered a small interested crowd of potential customers, and it certainly gave us a memory to take home.

A general "thank you" to Larry Taunton
Having spent probably more time than necessary scouring the internet for a voice that addresses the issues Christianity is facing today in a respectful and confident manner, I have found no better voice than that of Larry Taunton and Fixed Point. Speaking with clarity and genuine compassion Fixed Point is the voice that people need to hear; intelligent, reasonable, and unapologetically in the service of Jesus Christ. Your ministry is exactly the kind of thing that Christ needs in todays environment, exactly the kind of thing that I support and hope to emulate sometime in the future.

Thank You
_Nate
